Welcome to the Department of Health Services and Information Management (HSIM). We are proud of our department and its contribution to the missions of East Carolina University, the Health Sciences Division, and the College of Allied Health Sciences. Our engagement in teaching, research and service align with the university mission of student success, public service, and regional transformation. Take a moment to peruse this website as it serves to introduce you to our programs and our outstanding faculty and staff.At the undergraduate level, we offer the BS in Health Services Management and BS in Health Information Management programs.

Our BS degree in Health Services Management will allow you to contribute to and support the desire to help others through the business sector of the healthcare field. As a healthcare administrator, you will be on the forefront of managing some of the most complex institutions in our society including. hospitals, post-acute care facilities, group practices, insurance companies, state and federal health agencies, educational programs and research facilities.

Our BS degree in Health Information Management will allow you to contribute to and support the desire to help others through health information dissemination. As a health information manager, you will be on the forefront of collecting, integrating, and analyzing primary and secondary health care data, communicate the information, and manage information resources related to research, planning, delivery, and evaluation of health care services. Also, this program is the only one from a public institution in the state of North Carolina for which graduate students are eligible to take the Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).

At the graduate level, we offer the MS degree in Health Informatics and Information Management as well as four certificate programs – Health Information Management, Health Informatics, Health Care Administration, Health Care Management (MBA) – for students and professionals who are interested in gaining knowledge and skills in the specific field.

The MS in Health Informatics and Information Management program will allow you to assume leadership and technology roles in the design, development, and management of enterprise level health information systems. You will be in a position to be a contribute to the digital revolution transforming the health care industry.

We are proud of our faculty members and their teaching excellence. Several of our professors have received the College of Allied Health Science Dean’s Teaching Award as well receiving recognition as Distinguished Professors for Teaching by the North Carolina Board of Governors.

To enforce their teaching and contribute to the knowledge base, our faculty also engage in exciting research activities including consumer health informatics, data analytics, EHR implementation, health coding quality, healthcare quality, healthcare economics, and healthcare leadership.

Service is part of our culture as faculty, staff, and students serve the university and community at all levels to contribute to the organization and the society.

We strive to offer the best education possible to our diverse student body through a rigorous curriculum and exemplary teaching pedagogy, relevant research, and experiential learning & professional development gained from internships and our connectivity to alumni, local, and regional organizations.
